How does one prove they are a specific religion?

Other than for males in the Jewish religion with a bris certificate, I know of no religion that has formal proof if you are a member or not. How can someone ever prove what religion he is? Couldn't anyone say he is a Christian without any proof required? Even something like National Geographic sends you a membership certificate. Why not religions?
